The Great American Summer Movie Watchlist

Some movies just feel like summer.

Maybe it’s because summer itself used to feel different. Long evenings. Fireflies. Riding bikes until dark. Watching movies on VHS with cousins sprawled across the floor while the box fan hummed in the background.

Every summer, I create a watchlist of movies for our family. It’s always a mix of “oh, I’ve been wanting to watch that,” childhood favorites, and movies we never got around to watching.

But as we head into this specific summer, America’s 250th birthday (who else is a bicentennial baby?!), I found myself giving our annual list a little extra thought. I didn’t want a “rah, rah, America is perfect” one. And not one made up of baseball, small towns, and apple pie. Still, I wanted some titles that felt uniquely American.

This watchlist is a collection of movies that feel like a summer in America. Some are childhood classics, some are newer. They all carry a sense of possibility, curiosity, and adventure.

Whether you watch one movie a week or just pick a few favorites for a rainy afternoon, here’s your Great American Summer Movie Watchlist.
