Instagram Accounts Your Homeschool Needs to Follow

 

Last summer I was contemplating ways I could incorporate technology into our classroom that went beyond computer games & connected us to the world beyond our classroom walls.  Instagram came to mind.  I already followed several accounts that would fit into our schooling but I went about to find non-HS focused ones that would still prove educational.  Here are some of our favorites.

World Geography

When you think of stunning photos with an educational appeal, National Geographic may be the first thing that comes to mind.  And with good reason.  They have well-earned their reputation for stunning pictures of people, places and animals all over this world.   Their companion account, National Geographic Travel, will also provide lots of opportunities to learn about our home planet.
It’s no secret that Americans (myself included!) tend to have stereotypical images of Africa and that those images don’t do justice to the variation that exists throughout the continent.  One of my goals in the past school years was to expose the kids & myself to images that move beyond lions, savannahs & painted bodies.  I came across this post that led me to several accounts we now follow. Everyday Africa,  Nana Kofi Acquah (from Ghana), Steven Choskisi (based in Zimbabwe) and Meet South Africa (tourism) are fitting the bill.

Science

Our main science this year is astronomy, so the International Space Station and NASA get a lot of viewing by us.  We are using Elemental Science as our spine but letting our learning really be interest-led…and these accounts have given us a lot of interests to investigate!   Stunning photos that will leave you amazed at how vast space is.  And how beautiful.

 

US Geography

If stunning pictures of the US, pictures that will leave your mouth agape at the beautiful & varied country we call home, sounds good to you, My Public Lands by the Bureau of Land Management is a do-not miss account!  Every time I look at their pictures, I am left amazed at how beautiful this place is.  And my ‘field trip’ list grows, too!  The pictures have led to lots of discussion on geography, animals, weather, etc.  National Park Service (and the accounts of any of your favorite national parks) and the US Department of the Interior are similar accounts we enjoy.

Art

The Metropolitan Museum of Art (or the Modern Museum of Art, if that is more your style) posts pieces of art as well information about the pieces.
